An Ambassador and a Manager for Brussels Smart City

The Smart City Ambassador and Smart City Manager occupy two key roles for disseminating the Brussels Smart City strategy.

Smart City Ambassador

Every year, a well-known Brussels figure is appointed by the Brussels-Capital Region to the Smart City Ambassador role. This person, recognised and influential on the Smart City theme, becomes Mr or Ms Smart City for the region to promote Brussels, in Belgium and abroad, as a smart city. They also push their message in the Region. The political leaders of Brussels and the Brussels Smart City actors, in particular, can call on their expertise.

Our Smart City Ambassadors

Pieter Ballon (2016-17) is the author of the book “Smart Cities” (in Dutch) in which he defines the smart city as a “city where information and communications are mediated by ICTs and embedded in the urban context” and lists five key measures to develop a smart city: transform the city into a permanent laboratory, set measurable and ambitious objectives, appoint a CTO (Chief Technology Officer) responsible for implementing an approach in stages, regulate the IT architecture of the smart city and establish cooperation between smart regions.

Smart City Manager

The Smart City Manager of the Brussels-Capital Region is a regional contact point for all the actual Smart City projects. This person has an active part in preparing Smart City policy by contributing their expertise and their network as well as making concrete proposals according to the opportunities identified.
